Ever considered using double-bladed safety razors? Not only are they inexpensive, but they can get you the CLOSEST shave!
Let’s face it, everyone is looking for ways to save money on everyday necessities. For people like myself who are required to shave every day I work, saving money shaving is important. The average annual cost of disposable razors can be hundreds of dollars if you are like me and need 5 blades. Typically, disposable razors for sensitive skin are pricier than regular blades. One example is the BIC Flex 5 razor. While this razor is great for sensitive skin, it breaks the bank at almost $20 for 1 handle and 6 cartridges. Going through 1 pack of cartridges per month could very well add up to $100 per year in razors alone! I asked myself “how can I save money shaving?”.
The Cheapest Shave: Double Bladed Safety Razors
Most people have at least heard of double-bladed safety razors. However, did you know that they are an insanely cheap alternative to disposable cartridge razors? I made the switch years ago to a double-bladed razor and have not looked back since. I make two purchases PER YEAR on shaving. Just two.
Double-bladed safety razors are traditional-style razors that were first made popular over 100 years ago as an alternative to straight razors. Safety razors were designed to provide a clean smooth shave while minimizing nicks and cuts. The cost of entry to shaving with a double-blade safety razor can be 4x cheaper than using disposable cartridge razors. Let’s break down how I save money shaving.
The Cost of Double Blade Safety Razors
Double-blade safety razors are incredibly affordable because they are so simple. You start by picking a handle, which I strongly recommend the Rockwell R1 Razor. For blades, I have never been disappointed by Astra Platinum double edge safety razor blades. In total, the only thing you need is a quality handle and some good double-edge razor blades. That’s it. I purchase two packs of Astra razor blades per year and hardly use them all.
Let’s break down the cost:
Double Blade Safety Razor
- 1-time purchase – Rockwell R1 Razor
- 2x 100 count Astra razor blades
- Starting cost = under $35
- Yearly Astra razor blade cost = under $20
Disposable Cartridge Razor
- BIC Flex 5 starter pack = around $20
- 1 pack of cartridges per month = around $10 per pack
- Total yearly cost = approximately $120-$140
Savings with a double-bladed safety razor vs disposable cartridge razor can save you $100+ per year easily depending on your shaving needs!
The Verdict
Switching to a double-edge safety razor can not only save you lots of money on shaving but can improve the quality of your shave. Since switching to a double-edge safety razor I have found that my skin is smoother, I have fewer shave bumps, and I enjoy shaving more. The feeling of a safety razor is far better in the hand than a cheap disposable cartridge razor. Also, double-edge safety razors are very eco-friendly as they are recyclable and are typically made of all metal. By switching to a double-bladed safety razor you not only save money and get a better shave, but you are also reducing plastic waste from disposable cartridges.
